Meditation Points:

  • People who lived in conformity with these rules would certainly be different from their non-conforming neighbors.
  • Spiritual devotedness to God affects all areas of our lives.
  • Not all spiritual practices are acceptable to God. Superstitious traditions should be abandoned.
  • He who loves God will love his neighbor-his employee neighbor, his disabled neighbor, his foreign neighbor, his married neighbor, his unmarried neighbor, his older neighbor, all his neighbors.
  • Honesty is expected in our business and in our social relationships.

Leviticus 11:44

Instructions concerning false worship, forbidden food, and family issues

I. Sacrifices outside God’s approved system are prohibited (Leviticus 17:1-9)

 Meditation Points:

  • When we say that we don’t need to go to church, we are declaring our independence from God and our intent to worship that which is not God.
  • By proscribing the ingestion of blood, God was emphasizing the greater reality that only a blood sacrifice can atone for sin.

Matthew 26:28  For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Romans 3:25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Hebrews 9:22  And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

  • In God’s wisdom and grace, the blood ordinance passed away with the Christ’s completed sacrifice at Calvary–long before men discovered blood transfusions for medical purposes.
  • The ways of the Egyptians and Canaanites may have been widespread, popular and enticing; but they were contrary to the will of the holy God. Let us not be conformed to our world either. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is NOT a divine commandment!

Romans 12:2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  • Marrying close relatives may have been the norm when the human population was small; but as men spread across the globe, God forbad such relationships. One may argue that this was the right decision from a geneticist’s point of view. But we must examine this from God’s point of view. Nakedness is a sign of sin (remember Adam and Eve?). By forbidding marriages to close relatives, and even half-relatives and in-laws, God is teaching us that we must not intentionally expose the sins of our families. This is not an order to deny such sin; but rather instruction on recognizing the human condition–our condition.
  • Just what was the abomination mentioned in Leviticus 18:22 if it wasn’t homosexuality?
  • Religious sex orgies were prohibited (18:21).
  • Nations fall because of sin (18:24-30)

Proverbs 14:34  Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

15Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: she is thy son's wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
16Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness.
17Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is wickedness.
18Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.
Leviticus 18:19-24
19Also thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness.

Meditation Points:

  • Nadab and Abihu died for their defiant entrance into God’s presence; if Aaron and the others would avoid a similar end, they must follow these rules.
  • The theme of this chapter is the annual Day of Atonement. The sacrifices of this day were for sins past, and they opened up the door to a new year of sin which must be followed by its own day of atonement. As a picture, or type, of a much greater and spiritual event, the mere repetition of an atonement day is far overshadowed by the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ for the sins past and future!
  • The priest must offer sacrifices for himself and for the people.  Jesus had no need of a sacrifice for Himself, as He knew no sin in His character or life.
  • Two goats were required: one to picture the dying sacrifice, and the other to picture the living sacrifice. One for crucifixion, and another for resurrection.
  • The casting of lots, which Proverbs 16:33 says is always controlled by God, reminds us that only God can say what sacrifice He requires; as He said in Isaiah 28:16 … 

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

  • This method of allowing God to show His will is found also in Joshua 7:16-17; Joshua 14:2; and Acts 1:26.
