Counting the Levites

Levitical Family Number of age-qualified men
Kohath 2,750
Gershon 2,630
Merari 3,200

Total:

8,580

Meditation Points:

What?  No women allowed to minister in the tabernacle? And nobody older than 50 years? And nobody less than 30 years old? That just isn’t fair! We need to pass a law criminalizing such sex and age discrimination. And they probably didn’t allow Buddhists, Muslims or atheists to work there either. And no doubt they kept homosexuals and lesbians out, too. We’ve already seen that they didn’t allow people with physical disabilities to be priests. Who do they think they are limiting the leadership to men of a certain age? I want to speak to the one who is behind all of this…

How old was Jesus when He began to teach and preach?

Job assignments for the Levites

Family Location around the Tabernacle Census of males one month and older Work responsibility
Gershon West 7,500 The tent and its coverings, hangings, cords, and curtains
Kohath South 8,600 The ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars and the utensils
Merari North 6,200 The boards, bars, pillars and sockets

Total:

22,000 (22,273)

Moses & Aaron East   Packing and unpacking and daily and special services

Meditation Points:

  • The Priests and Levites encamp immediately around the Tabernacle, between the Tabernacle and the other Tribes. So also the sinner must approach God by way of Christ the servant and high priest.
  • Moses and Aaron, though Levites themselves, are separated from the others.
  • The Levites must carry the sacred furniture, but they are not to take part in the packing and unpacking thereof.
  • The Levites were accepted by God as a substitute for all the first-born sons in Israel. The first-born who were not thus redeemed by a Levite, were to be redeemed by money.

 Meditation Points:

  • God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33), and He expects all things to be done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40).
  • God appointed the grouping; Israel had no choice in the matter. Often we find ourselves grouped with people we would not have chosen; but our duty is to submit to God’s providence.
  • A place for everything, and everything in its place.

Psalm 99:1-9
1The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.
2The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.
3Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.
4The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.
5Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.
6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.
7He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.
8Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.
9Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
