Notes: February 1, 2009 – Psalms 87 & 45

God’s love for His city and His queen

Psalm 87

  • God loves some more than others (Psalm 87:2). The sooner you accept that fact, the sooner you will be able to submit fully to His will.
  • The reputation of the city of God is glorious (v 3). At least it is among the people who know God. Others find nothing to be desired in the place of God’s habitation.
  • Of all the places where one could be born, none is more glorious than the city of God. Three times our psalmist rejoices that he was from God’s place (v 4,5, 6) Where were you born? Were you ever born of God (John 1:13)? Born again (John 3:3,5)? Born of the Spirit, and not just of the flesh?

Psalm 45

A love (of God) song. Who is this king?

  • who is fairer than the children of men (v 2)
  • whose lips are covered with grace
  • who is blessed of God forever
  • who is the mighty one (v 3)
  • whose sword is tied to him by his glory and majesty
  • who carries himself with truth and meekness and righteousness (v 4)
  • whose arrows slay the hearts of his enemies (v 5)
  • who causes men to fall beneath him
  • whose throne is forever (v 6; Luke 1:32-33; Hebrews 1:8; Isaiah 9:6-7)
  • whose kingdom reigns in righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5)
  • who loves righteousness and hates wickedness (v 8; Matthew 3:15; Hebrews 1:9)
  • who is anointed by God-more so than any others
  • who is surrounded by women of position, even a queen (v 9)
  • who loves the queen (v 11)
  • who is lord over the queen
  • who is to be worshiped by the queen
  • to whom is presented the queen in all her beauty (v 14). Without spot or blemish? (Ephesians 5:25-27)
