Notes: February 18, 2008- Exodus 2 & 3

Moses-from womb to well to wilderness

Exodus 2

I. Moses enters the world (1-4)

1: Amram and Jochebed (Exodus 6:20) have a son

2: By faith (Hebrews 11:23) they hide the boy for 3 months

II. Moses rescued from the ark (5-10)

5: The Princess finds the child, lying in a basket

6: She recognizes that he is a Hebrew boy

8-9: She accepts the offer of a Hebrew nurse for the baby

10: At a later time, Pharaoh’s daughter names him Moses

III. Moses flees the palace (11-15)

11-12: In defense of a Hebrew slave, Moses kills an Egyptian

13-14: Attempting to stop two Hebrews from fighting, Moses learns that his murder of the Egyptian is not a secret

15: Fearing for his life, Moses leaves Egypt

IV. Moses meets the Midianite priest (16-22)

16-17: Moses defends the Priest’s (grand?)daughters

18-20: The priest invites Moses to stay (and he does, for 40 years)

21-22: Eventually Moses marries one of the 7 women

V. God hears the cries of the Israelites (23-25)

23: Meanwhile, life has not become easier for the Hebrews living in Egypt

24-25: God hears their cries and remembers His covenant with their ancestors

Meditation Points:

  • How do you hide a baby for 3 months?
  • How is Moses in the basket like/unlike abandoning a child on the orphanage doorsteps?
  • Have you ever done something wrong for a very good reason?
  • Have your intentions for good ever been misunderstood by the very people you desired to help?
  • Compare 2:18 with 3:1 and Numbers 10:29.
  • Compare Moses’ finding a wife to Jacob’s.
  • Does God still care for his people?

Exodus 3

I. Moses meets God (1-6)

1: Moses was working the day he met God

2: God arrested Moses’ attention with a bush that burned without being consumed

3: Curiosity brought Moses closer to God

4-5: God warns Moses that this meeting is much more than a sideshow act

6: When Moses realized that it was God, Moses hid his face.

II. Moses is commissioned by God (7-10)

7-10: God states His purpose

11: God announces Moses to be part of the great deliverance of Israel from Egypt

III. Moses learns the name of God (11-15)

11-12: Moses objects. God assures him that He will go with him.

13-15: Moses wants to know God’s name.

IV. Moses given the bad news and the good (16-22)

16-17: The message that Moses is to deliver to the tribal elders of Israel

18: The elders will follow Moses’ leadership

19-20: Pharaoh will object, until God sends plagues upon Egypt

21-22: Then the Egyptians will pay Israel to leave the land

Meditation Points

  • You don’t need to be in a church building to find God.
  • God never burns out; why do we?
  • A holy place is anywhere that God is.
  • God has a long history of faithfulness to His people. We should have a long history of faithfulness to God.
  • God intervenes in the affairs of men for His purposes and for the good of His people.
  • Who is sufficient for the task of representing God before our families and kings?
  • God is ever “I am”. There never was a time when He was not; there never shall be a time when He is not.
  • The land of milk and honey, where animals and plants are fruitful.
  • We often see obstacles and hesitate to obey God. Be assured that God knows all the obstacles long before we think of them. Pharaoh’s recalcitrance is not a surprise to God. God has everything under control.
